Lab parallelograms (5th)

To start my course on parallelograms, I developed a series of experiments that students perform in rotating TP. Each experiment
is designed the same way, in four steps:

1) construction of a parallelogram with the proposed equipment
2) Explanation of mathematical vocabulary into play
3) Writing a property sufficient to make a parallelogram.
4) Using this property to construct a parallelogram using geometrical instruments.

Students are divided into groups of two or three. Whenever the construction is completed, the students are validated on a grid of validation. They can then answer the following questions.

To begin the meeting, give a good mental image dui parallelogram, fix the definition and provide a "mold" to other editors, all students begin by TP 1.
TP1: definition of parallelogram
Materials provided: 4 sheets of tracing paper, with two lines drawn. Only layers 1 and 4 show parallel lines 2-2.

questions (questions 4, 6 and 7 are exactly the same for all labs (at almost offsets), I did not recover thereafter.

1) With the help of two Layers well selected, building a parallelogram. Be validated by the teacher.
2) What are the numbers of layers you have chosen to build these parallelograms?
3) Why did you choose these layers there?
4) Make a diagram of your building with the quadrilateral ABCD. What can we say about this figure using a TP?

5) Complete the sentence:
A parallelogram is a quadrilateral ................................ ..........
................................................. ..............................

6) Using this property, complete the parallelogram ABCD.

7) What build tools do you use?

After letting the students try ten minutes, a typical correction is proposed.

TP 2: Sufficient condition for equal lengths in pairs. (with chopsticks)

Two TP with different hardware but leading to the same property
TP 2: Sticks and 4 clamps

1) Choose the material on the table to build a parallelogram . Make
validated by the teacher.

2) How did you choose the stems?

3) What are the stems the same length in this parallelogram?

sentence to complete:

If a quadrilateral ... .................................... .................................................. ..........., then it is a parallelogram.

TP2 bis (with bar tack)
material: 4-band mechanic, 4 screws, 4 nuts

1) build a parallelogram with all hardware proposed. Be validated by the teacher.

2) How did you put the screws?

Phrase to complete: If a quadrilateral
... ....................................... .................................................. ........, then it is a parallelogram.

TP3: sufficient condition for the central symmetry (or the middle of the diagonals.)

Material: 2 stalks mechanic, 5 screws and nuts, elastic.

1) Build a parallelogram with all the equipment proposed. Be validated by the teacher.

2) What are the two bars for mechanical parallelogram ?

3) What is the elastic parallelogram?

4) How did you put the screws on the bars?

sentences to complete:

If a quadrilateral has diagonals that ................................. ..........., then it is a parallelogram.

If a quadrilateral admits a ........................................... ............., then it is a parallelogram.

TP4: sufficient condition for two sides.

Material: 3 stalks mechanically prepared, 4 screws, 4 nuts, elastic.

1) How were mounted pins 1 and 3 relative to pin 2?

2) What can be said of the rods 1 and 3?

3) What property did you use?

4) Using the proposed equipment, construct a parallelogram. Be validated by the teacher.

5) How did you choose the location of the screws? Phrase to complete

If a quadrilateral has two ..................................... ...................., then it is a parallelogram.

TP5: Sufficient conditions on the angles

Material: transparent sheets.

1) Choose good transparent sheets to build a parallelogram. Be validated by the teacher.
2) What are the sheets that you have chosen?

3) How did you choose these leaves?

4) What can we say opposite angles in a parallelogram?

5) What can be said of consecutive angles in a parallelogram?
sentences to complete

If a quadrilateral has its opposite angles .........................................., Then it is a parallelogram

If a quadrilateral has angles consecutive .............................., then it is a parallelogram.

We must allow two hours for this lab.
Most students are enthusiastic.
